When Lady Gaga makes her musical DC debut, fans are sure to know some of the words.



A source told Variety that the upcoming musical sequel Joker: Folie à Deux with Joaquin Phoenix will be 'mostly a jukebox musical,' consisting of at least 15 'very well-known' songs.

One such number will be Judy Garland's 'That's Entertainment' from the 1953 musical The Band Wagon.

Although there's a possibility for a couple of original songs to appear, it's unknown who would write or perform those numbers. 

Composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, who won her first Academy Award for composing the 2019 film, has been able to 'infuse her distinctive, haunting [music] cues' into each song.

Gaga joined the cast of the sequel as Harley Quinn in 2022, when director Todd Phillips announced it would be a musical.

Phoenix reprises his role as the eponymous comic book villain, following his Oscar-winning performance in the origin story. 

Zazie Beetz also reprises her role, with Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland and Harry Lawtey joining the cast. 

Phillips penned the sequel with Scott Silver, reuniting after the original. 

Filming began in December 2022 in New York and Los Angeles, wrapping in April 2023.

Joker grossed more than $1 billion globally, and the budget for the next installment has reportedly approached $200 million.

After the first movie showed the Arthur Fleck's origins as the Joker and how his deteriorating mental health led to his life of crime and a stint at Arkham Asylum, the sequel will show his love story with Dr. Harleen Quinzel (AKA Harley Quinn).

Gaga's superhero movie debut comes after her Oscar-nominated performance in the 2018 A Star Is Born remake, which earned her Best Original Song for 'Shallow.' 

She has also served memorable performances in Machete Kills (2013), Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) and House of Gucci (2021), as well as multiple seasons of American Horror Story.

Joker: Folie á Deux is set to premiere October 4 in theaters.

Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix were shown as their characters in the upcoming Joker sequel on Wednesday in photos shared by director Todd Phillips on social media.



The 53-year-old director posted three photos of Gaga, 37, and Phoenix, 49, as Dr. Harleen Quinzel aka Harley Quinn and Arthur Fleck aka Joker from the upcoming film Joker: Folie à Deux.

'Hoping your day is full of love. 10.4.24,' Phillips wrote as a caption on the Valentine's Day post for his roughly 644,000 followers.

Joker: Folie à Deux is a sequel to the 2019 film Joker and is scheduled to be released on October 4, 2024, by Warner Bros. Pictures.

Phillips along with the photos included a dateline of Gotham City, which is the fictional city in DC Comics best known as the home of superhero Batman.

The lead photo showed Phoenix in full Joker makeup wearing a red suit while standing next to Gaga as Harley who also sported read and white face paint.

A black-and-white photo featured Joker and a smiling Dr. Quinzel touching noses while separated by prison bars.

Harley Quinn was created for Batman: The Animated Series that first aired on Fox Kids in September 1992 as Joker's sidekick and love interest and the character later started appearing on the pages of DC Comics in 1999.

Her comic books origin story has Dr. Harleen Quinzel as a psychiatrist at Gotham City's Arkham Asylum who falls in love with her patient, the Joker, and becomes his lover and accomplice while assuming the identity of Harley Quinn.

A third black-and-white photo showed Joker and Harley dancing on a rooftop under a giant full moon.

Phillips in December also shared promotional images of Gaga and Phoenix on Instagram.

''Wishing everyone a happy holiday and a beautiful new year. Oct 2024,' he wrote as a caption.

The 2019 Joker film that Phillips directed and co-wrote with Scott Silver, 59, ended with the Joker being treated at Arkham after committing murder and inspiring a deadly riot.

Joker: Folie à Deux also stars Zazie Beetz, 32, who will reprise her role of Sophie Dumond from the first film.
